The Making of Tatsumiya - Episode 7: Clean and beautiful, invisible consideration

The essence of a machiya is not luxury or conspicuous decoration, but the beauty that resides in consideration for the invisible parts.

This spirit is firmly alive in the very foundations that support daily life, such as Tatsumiya's floors, tatami mats, and washrooms.

At Tatsumiya, we use high-quality floor tiles for the floors throughout the inn.

The appearance is woodgrain, and while it has a natural expression and warmth like real solid wood, the material is a highly functional type with excellent water resistance and durability.

The surface is intentionally finished with a rough texture, and the finish is so delicate that you can feel the "real touch of wood" when walking barefoot.

That's because, even in the extraordinary space of staying in a machiya,
it is Tatsumiya's hospitality to maintain the "cleanliness" and "sense of security" that are essential for a modern inn.

No matter how beautiful the space is, if the floor feels damp or dirty, comfort is compromised.

For guests from overseas, the uniquely Japanese "shoes off" culture is a new experience, but it can also lead to anxiety about whether the floors they walk on barefoot are clean.

That's why Tatsumiya decided to use high-quality floor tiles that combine a "Japanese look" with a "practical Western look."

It's not just for aesthetics, it's also an invisible consideration to create a "quiet sense of trust" that makes everyone feel safe to put their feet down.

We also pay special attention to the tatami mats.
While valuing the Japanese aesthetic, we use resin tatami mats.
They look the same as real rush grass, but they are resistant to moisture, do not easily get moldy, and are very durable.
They have been reborn as "modern townhouse tatami mats" that are both comfortable and clean, with careful attention paid to the scent and feel.

For the washroom, we chose matte white tiles.
They reflect light softly, and have a clean look with a hint of old-fashioned flavor.
They don't make unnecessary claims, but they give the entire space a quiet impression of "order."

The beauty of Tatsumiya lies not in its visual grandeur, but in the accumulation of "unobtrusive attentions" that soothe the hearts of those who use it.
It is these invisible details that give shape to the dignity of the inn itself.
