The Making of Tatsumiya - Prologue (Special Edition): What Is an Osaka Machiya?

A Record of How a Machiya Guesthouse Was Born

In June 2025, a new machiya-style guesthouse called Tatsumiya will open in the Tenma district of Osaka.
But this is not just another renovation project.

Tatsumiya is a reimagining of Edo-period aesthetics, the spirit of Osaka merchants, and the quiet pulse of local culture—
woven together into a space where philosophy takes physical form.

Ahead of the grand opening, we would like to present a series of documents that tell the story of how Tatsumiya came into being.

In this Prologue (Part 0), we begin by exploring a fundamental question:
“What makes an Osaka machiya special?”

By understanding the origins and cultural value of these traditional townhouses, you'll gain deeper insight into the very soul of Tatsumiya—and the journey behind its creation.

1. A House That Breathes with the Town — The Value of Machiya in Osaka

A machiya is a traditional urban townhouse designed to integrate living and working—especially for merchants and artisans from the Edo to Taisho periods.

In Osaka, known as the Kitchen of the Nation, machiya were not only homes but also cultural pillars that supported the city's booming trade and vibrant everyday life.

Distinct features of Osaka machiya include:

- A two-story structure

- A combination of lattice and solid doors

- Long, narrow layouts with passageways and inner courtyards

While the exterior is modest, the interior often reveals refined materials and details.
This reflects the Osaka merchant ideal: frugal on the outside, refined within.

Iki — a concept of understated Japanese elegance — lives in every corner.

Unlike Kyoto’s more ceremonial style of machiya, Osaka's versions leaned into practical elegance.
They served as workspaces, embedded with the merchant’s values of
“save in everyday life, spare no effort when it matters” and
“trust above all.”

2. Why Machiya, and Why Now?

A machiya is not just an old building.
It’s a way of thinking about life, work, community, and beauty all at once.
It represents an architectural philosophy where people, time, and place intertwine.

In recent years, cafes and inns inspired by machiya have grown in number.
But few truly honor their cultural depth—with original materials, fixtures, and atmosphere intact.

Tatsumiya is designed to be a modern evolution of the machiya,
offering comfort without compromising authenticity.

Staying in a machiya means encountering the soul of a place—
especially in Osaka, where the city's essence lives in its side streets, not its sightseeing spots.

Here, we don’t just offer a place to sleep.
We offer a place where you can quietly connect with history, people, and place.

-------

3. The Value of Tatsumiya and the Osaka Machiya

Tatsumiya was born from old materials found during dismantling—
including wartime walls, newspapers from the postwar era, and hand-crafted fixtures now lovingly restored.

Every corner of this space is built with the philosophy of the machiya in mind:
how light enters, how air flows, how space feels over time.

This is not simply a “machiya-style inn.”
This is a guesthouse where you can feel the way of thinking behind the machiya itself.

If you’re the kind of traveler who wants to:

- Discover a deeper side of Osaka

- Engage with local culture, not just visit it

- Experience something truly authentic

Then this place was made for you.
