The Making of Tatsumiya - Episode 10 (final episode): Tatsumiya awakens with memories of history
Share
It took about three months of demolition and reconstruction.
Through the hands of craftsmen, carving, firing, and trimming, a machiya was given new life.
When I first visited this place, all I saw was an old, nameless building.
The walls had collapsed, the ceiling had fallen, and only time had quietly accumulated.
But deep inside, the invisible "memories of life" were certainly still there.
We chose to listen to, accept, and respect those voiceless memories, and reweave them for the future.
And now——
Tatsumiya has finally awakened as an inn.
Paying attention to the invisible parts.
That is the essence of a machiya, and the value that Tatsumiya cherishes.
The moment you open the door, you are greeted by silence.
A machiya quietly stands in this alley, just a little away from the hustle and bustle.
This silence does not simply mean that there is little sound, but a deep silence with a sense of space that gently subsides the noise in your mind.
The space exudes an air of iki.
It is not flashiness, but the elegance that resides in the carefully selected materials and their arrangement.
The rhythm of the shadows cast by the lattice, the subtly lit lanterns, the scent of wood that regulates the breath.
All of this communicates the philosophy of this inn eloquently without speaking out loud.
And there is warmth there.
It is not just a building, but a place that exists in the relationship between the town, people, and time.
Something like the body heat of the inn, which cannot be depicted on a blueprint, slowly envelops the space.
Tatsumiya is not just a guesthouse.
It is not a facility that preserves culture, nor is it a production space for tourism.
It is an inn as an idea, where you can interact with history, connect with the town, breathe with people, and come into contact with values through the experience of staying there.
A machiya townhouse is more than just a piece of architecture; it is "wisdom for living with the town."
Tatsumiya is a modern reconstruction of that wisdom.
It is our sincere hope that those who visit our inn from now on will encounter the town, regain their own rhythm, and go home with some small "realization."
So come and weave your own story at our inn.
Tatsumiya is always quietly, but surely, waiting for you.
