The Making of Tatsumiya - Part 5: A Guesthouse That Breathes with the Town

[Introduction]

Tatsumiya, a machiya guesthouse, will open in Tenma, Osaka in June 2025.
This inn, which inherits the merchant culture and machiya architecture of the Edo period, is not just a reproduction.
We have created a space that connects to the present from scratch, picking up "fragments" of history.
In this series, we will tell you why this inn is special through the record of "how Tatsumiya was made".

-------

Tatsumiya is not just an inn that reproduces machiya architecture.
It aims to be an "inn that lives with the town".
And there is a deep meaning behind the fact that the setting is the land of Tenma, Osaka.

Unlike glamorous tourist destinations, Tenma is a town where the "warmth of everyday life" remains.

Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street, the longest shopping street in Japan, is lined with coffee shops and standing bars that have been in business since the Showa era, long-established soba restaurants, and shops where you can shop casually.
There are also spots where you can experience history and culture, such as Keichotei, where you can experience rakugo, and Osaka Tenmangu Shrine.

This town has a culture not for tourists, but for the people who live there.
Tatsumiya wants to be the "middle" that connects travelers with this culture.

For example, you can be served recommended dishes by the chef of a restaurant near the inn.
Try the fruit you bought at the greengrocer on the shopping street at the inn.
Chat with regular customers at a small cafe in an alley.

Feeling the "deep breath of the town" that is not listed in the tourist guide will make your trip much richer.

Tatsumiya also provides mechanisms to connect you with the town.
For example, a mini guidebook introducing the local area and a map of famous restaurants that are within a 5-minute walk from Tatsumiya.
Tatsumiya staff will also support your stay as residents of Tenma.

Staying at the inn means you are in touch with the town.
The "people and the place" will remain as a set in your travel memories.

That is exactly the way we aim to be an "inn connected to the town."

Blending into the town, communicating the town.

Tatsumiya exists as if breathing softly into the town of Tenma.

(*The town of Tenma will be introduced in detail in a separate article.)
