Tokyo’s Must-Visit Temple! Discover the Spirit of Japan at Senso-ji

1. History of Senso-ji Senso-ji Temple, located in Tokyo’s Asakusa district, is the oldest temple in Tokyo, founded in 628.

　　

According to legend, two fishermen discovered a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, in the Sumida River, leading to the temple's establishment. Since then, Senso-ji has been a spiritual center for Kannon worship and was a popular pilgrimage site during the Edo period. Today, it attracts over 30 million visitors annually as one of Tokyo’s most beloved attractions.

- Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate)

The iconic entrance gate features a large red lantern and statues of the gods of wind and thunder, believed to protect people from evil.

After passing through Kaminarimon, you’ll find Nakamise Street, a lively shopping street lined with traditional souvenirs and Japanese sweets. Trying ningyo-yaki (doll-shaped cakes) and kaminari-okoshi (crispy rice snacks) is highly recommended.

 

- Main Hall

The temple’s main hall houses the Kannon statue, a sacred spot for prayer. Visitors can also try drawing an omikuji (fortune slip) here, a fun Japanese experience.

Senso-ji and Tokyo Skytree Together There’s a great photo spot a short walk from Senso-ji, where you can capture Tokyo Skytree with the temple’s main hall and five-story pagoda.
